Most people will agree air conditioning is no longer simply a luxury, but a necessity. Summers in the southern U. S. have always been hot and humid, but of late, they are brutal. When your AC goes out, or when the AC is blowing warm air, utilize the following tips:
Check the Thermostat
Ensure no one has changed the settings on the thermostat. It should be set to Cool, and the fan should be on Auto. If the fan is not on Auto, it will be running constantly, including when the compressor shuts off. This can result in what appears to be the AC blowing warm air.
Check the Filter
An excessively dirty filter can result in a number of problems with the HVAC system. In addition, a dirty filter can cause dirt and debris throughout the system, from the coil to the ductwork. A dirty coil, indoors or out, can cause issues which can result in the AC blowing warm air. Change/clean the filter each month or as recommended by the system manufacturer. Dirty coils will require professional cleaning by your HVAC technician.
Check the A/C Unit’s Power
If the unit does nothing at all, and will not start up, verify it is receiving power. Check the AC circuit breaker in the home’s electrical panel, and ensure the corresponding breaker has not tripped. If resetting the breaker does not restart the AC, go to the next step, or call Cypress Heating and Air Conditioning for service.
A power surge can cause a tripped breaker. However, if your electrical breaker is repeatedly tripping, it may indicate a serious problem with the system, or the home’s wiring. Depending upon the system, there may be an additional breaker located indoors or out.
Outdoors, the service box will most likely be located near the condenser. On the indoor component of a split system, depending upon the system, a fan switch and breakers may be located inside the unit’s air handler. A tripped breaker will prevent the system from receiving power, while a tripped fan switch will prevent the fan from operating. You can turn them back on; however, if they continue to trip, you will need to call for service by a qualified HVAC technician.
The Outdoor Condenser
Ensure nothing is blocking the outdoor condenser. Tall grass, objects within 2 ft. of the condenser, overgrown shrubs, and other objects will prevent adequate airflow and can cause poor performance, and can potentially damage the system.
Refrigerant Leak
A refrigerant leak is a common cause of the AC blowing warm air. If the system is low on refrigerant, ice is likely to form on components. Contact a Cypress Heating and Air Conditioning technician for repair.
