Ductless Mini-Split System| Heating and Air Conditioning
If your home lacks ductwork, or you have a room addition planned, a ductless mini-split system can provide the solution you need for heating and air conditioning.
A ductless mini-split system is a heat pump. It has the benefits of a heat pump, including energy efficiency, reliability, and comfort. A mini-split system is comprised of two main components, the indoor air handling unit and the outdoor condensing unit.
A Carrier ductless mini split system performs with greater energy efficiency than a central system, partially because there are no ducts losing conditioned air through leaks. In addition, the ductless system utilizes the latest technology by continuing to perform in cold winter temperatures at 80% capacity. Hot summer days are met with even greater efficiency, cooling at 100% capacity even when the outdoor temperature reaches 130° F.

Rebates, credits, and tax incentives may help to offset the initial purchase of Energy Star ductless mini-split heat pumps. Federal, state, local governments and utility companies determine availability from year to year. The purchase of an Energy Star qualified model will save you money by reducing energy use.
Carrier’s ductless system features an Inverter compressor, which automatically adjusts its speed to match the indoor requirements. A conventional compressor operates at with full capacity – whether you need it or not. An inverter compressor, however, operates at the output required, saving you energy and money.
In addition, ductless systems provide personalized heating and air conditioning for only the rooms or areas that you want to heat or air condition, eliminating wasted energy on rooms that are not occupied.
A central system cannot offer this convenience. Typically, in a conventional system, if you close off all the registers on the second floor for example, the system pressure and ventilation will be negatively impacted, resulting in duct air leaks and premature wear and tear on the heat pump.
The ductless system is designed to condition one room at a time or nine rooms without an adverse effect.
The ductless mini-split system provides personalized comfort. If a family member prefers to sleep in a cold room, and another prefers a warmer room, both needs will be met with a mini split.
This is possible because each room has its own indoor air handling unit, thermostat, and remote control, allowing individual custom control for each room’s heating and air conditioning.
Ductless heating and air conditioning will provide a higher air quality in each room where they are installed, with filters in each indoor unit. For those who suffer from asthma, allergies, or other respiratory conditions, the ductless system can provide them with cleaner air, avoiding the cross air contamination caused by a ducted central system. Some models use advanced filtration to purify the air in each zone, removing up to 99.9% of bacteria, viruses and other pollutants from the air moving through the unit providing.
To install a traditional forced air system in a new construction, older homes, or other locations requires the installation of a duct system. A mini-split system requires a mere three-inch hole in an exterior wall to connect the indoor and outdoor components. The compact size of a ductless system makes them ideal for small spaces, and they operate quietly. This feature is especially appreciated if the outdoor component must be located near a bedroom.
Proper installation is essential for optimal efficiency and performance of all HVAC systems. The use of a qualified HVAC contractor to provide installation will avoid the problems associated with an improperly sized or poorly installed system.
With accurate sizing and installation, ductless mini-split heat pumps can provide greater comfort, cleaner air, enhanced efficiency, and optimal performance.
