Heating System | Air Conditioning Installation

There are a number of considerations when it is time to select a new heating system. One consideration involves the decision of whether to choose a budget priced system or go with the premium. The fact is there are acceptable reasons for going with either choice when shopping for a new furnace or a complete heating and air conditioning installation.

AFUE Efficiency

The annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) is the measurement of furnace fuel utilization for the winter season in gas units. Today’s furnace AFUE ranges from 80% in a budget unit, to 98.5% in a premium furnace. The greatest difference between budget and premium furnaces is the efficiency rating. In simplified terms, AFUE is the amount of energy a furnace utilizes. For example, a unit with a 95% AFUE, wastes 5% of the energy consumed, efficiently using 95%.

Current energy standards as set forth by the U.S. Department of Energy, requires all new furnaces be at least 80 percent efficient. If your existing furnace is only 60 percent efficient, 40% of the fuel is being wasted. In this case, even a budget priced furnace would be a significant upgrade, reducing your heating costs in a big way.

HSPF Rating

Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF) is used in measuring the heating efficiency of a heat pump. The higher the number, the more energy efficient the heat pump is, and the more you will save on the cost of electricity for heating. Heat Pumps HSPF ratings are as high as 10, requiring a minimum of 8 to qualify for the Energy Star program.

Types of Heating Options

In Texas homes, the most common types of heating include electric or gas furnaces, and the heat pump. Choosing between a gas or electric furnace, or a heat pump – is often dependent on the area your home is located in, and your home’s current setup. In addition, you have to consider that natural gas is not available for all areas. Whether you select a furnace, or opt for a complete heating and air conditioning installation, Cypress Heating and Air Conditioning will provide a professional installation for your home.

Consider the Climate

People who live in the northern states expect long winters and costly energy bills. Residents of the Katy area expect to use more air conditioning than heating for most of the year. Cypress Heating and Air Conditioning has a variety of Carrier HVAC systems available just right for your goals and budget. We can install the furnace you select, or provide a complete heating and air conditioning installation for you.

Single Stage vs. Two Stage Furnaces

Your next decision is choosing between a single-stage or two-stage system. This refers to the valve that controls the burner in the furnace. In a single-stage furnace, the valve is either fully open or closed. A two-stage furnace has an open, closed, and partially open valve setting. When the valve is partially open, it is only using about 65 percent of its heating potential. This lower setting is ideal for mild Katy winters and saves on the gas bill.

When considering an electric furnace, consider the heat pump as an alternative. It is more efficient than electric furnaces, and offers superior efficiency for air conditioning as well. Furthermore, you receive both heating and air conditioning with energy efficient options such as variable speed compressors and blowers.

The heat pump offers a more energy efficient alternative than an electric furnace, and can provide you with superior savings come summer. If you are interested in further information, give us a call.
